Our History

Rooted in the Land, Shaped by Community

Minnedosa, meaning “flowing water” in Dakota Sioux, is nestled in the heart of the Little Saskatchewan River Valley. Long before settlers arrived, this area was a traditional gathering place for the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations, drawn by its fertile land and steady river. In the late 1800s, settlers from Eastern Canada and Europe made Minnedosa their home, turning it into a lively pioneer community.

By 1883, the town was officially incorporated. With mills, a growing agricultural base, and the arrival of Canadian Pacific Railway, Minnedosa quickly became an important hub in western Manitoba. In 1912, the construction of one of the province’s first hydroelectric dams created Minnedosa Lake, a community landmark and year-round recreation spot.
Today, Minnedosa blends its rich heritage with a vibrant lifestyle, welcoming visitors to explore its scenic landscapes, small-town charm, and stories preserved at Minnedosa Museum and Heritage Village.

The History of RM Minto–Odanah

The Rural Municipality of Minto–Odanah was formed in 2015, but its roots reach back more than a century. Rural Municipality of Odanah, established in 1883, and Rural Municipality of Minto, founded in 1902, grew through agriculture, trade, and the hard work of early settlers from Scotland, England, and Eastern Europe.
With rolling prairie landscapes and a strong farming tradition, the region has always been closely connected to Minnedosa as its service centre. Today, it remains a proud rural community where history, prairie beauty, and small-town hospitality come together.
